Key Features:
- Cable Support System
- Fabric and Cable Behavior
These 200ft-plus wide “Super-Banners” are fabric advertisements mounted onto the sides of existing buildings. With their dramatic content and prodigious size, they create a striking visual image. P.E. Structural designed an inventive secondary cable tension structure to support several of these banners showcased in downtown Dallas, TX.
The existing building itself serves as the primary support structure. A cable system was selected for the secondary support structure; cables anchored to the existing concrete structure frame the perimeter of the banner and run vertically at regular intervals behind the banner, providing intermediate support. Seams and grommets in the fabric are tested to provide strength data; these work together with the cables to form the complete system. The entire system - banner and support structure combined – must be lightweight so that installation does not require heavy machinery or excessive manpower.
Although provisions for the design of cables exist, this type of cable system was new to the engineering community. PESC conducted research to determine the individual and combined behavior of the fabric and cable components to develop a rational design procedure that meets current applicable design code provisions.
