Exotic Bridge Projects

Per TxDOT Precertification Category 5.4.1,

“This category includes the design of bridges with spans greater than 350 feet, suspension bridges, cable-stayed bridges, precast, post-tensioned segmental bridges, bridges requiring unique analytical methods, and movable bridges."

Prior to the formation of P.E. Structural Consultants, Inc., while serving TxDOT as Senior Design Engineer, Lisa Carter Powell played a major role in the design of the Elevated US 183 Project in Austin, Texas. This elevated urban freeway project features precast post-tensioned segmental box girder bridges supported by highly architectural precast and post-tensioned segmental piers. Ms. Powell was Engineer of Record for the highest, longest span flyover ramp which was designed and built using the balanced cantilever method. The five-span continuous structure includes 180ft. maximum spans, significant horizontal curvature and 60ft high precast segmental column supports. Internal post-tensioning provides prestressing for the cantilever condition, while external post-tensioning tendons are used to carry loads in the continuous structure.

Lisa Powell also played a key role in the design of the following exotic bridge projects, either as a representative of the Owner Agency, or as a member of the consultant design team providing services to the Owner Agency:

  • Louetta Road Overpass / Harris County, Texas
  • Precast Concrete U-Beam Standards / Statewide Use, Texas
  • C&D Canal Bridge, Main Span / Delaware
  • Clark Bridge Approach Spans / Illinois/Missouri
  • I-70 Hanging Lake Viaduct / Glenwood Canyon, Colorado
  • IH-10 and IH-35 San Antonio “Y” Project – III A&B / San Antonio, Texas
