Key Features:

  • Exposed Wood Structure
  • Tension Cables
  • Unique Geometry using Repetitive Frames

The project architect sought out P.E. Structural Consultants, Inc. to provide structural engineering services and to design the structure for this award winning wood-framed outdoor chapel.  Located in the piney woods of Bastrop, Texas on the banks of Lake Bastrop, the interfaith chapel will be rented out for special occasions, providing an additional source of income for the Cub Scouts.

The simple but precise design of the structural geometry contrasts with the rustic quality of the cedar members which are rough sawn at the bottom and more refined at the top. Each of 22 identical frames is composed of eight members interconnected with exposed steel plates and bolts. The identical frames are rotated incrementally to create a smooth arcing geometry and are tethered horizontally by two tensioned cables for lateral stability.

Since the lower members are wider with the members becoming narrower toward the top, the upper frame members do not touch one another and cantilever freely to sway in the wind.  This uniquely designed structure has been recognized with a full length article in Texas Architect (September/October 08) and also in Wood Design and Building Magazine (Spring 08 issue).  The chapel was the recipient of the prestigious Texas Society of Architects award.
