IH-37 is a primary transportation route inland from the Texas coast. P.E. Structural Consultants, Inc. provided structural engineering services for the widening of four existing 1960’s era highway bridges as part of this corridor widening project to provide an additional travel lane for hurricane evacuation to San Antonio. Two 3-span bridges crossing Spur 122 were originally constructed with steel wide-flange superstructures and were widened in kind. Two 10-span bridges crossing Salado Creek were originally constructed with precast concrete I-beam superstructures and were also widened in kind. New freestanding bents were designed and detailed to support the widened portion of the bridge decks. Existing abutments were extended to support the new widened superstructures. $17.3M Construction. Completed 2009.
