PESC is pleased to contribute to enhanced mobility in the Buda/Kyle area with their design of a new box beam overpass as Phase 1 of a 3-bridge intersection of County Road 132 (Cement Plant Rd) with IH35. The design effort had just begun in 2006 when the project had to be shelved due to a lack of funding. When AARA Stimulus funds became available in the Spring of 2009, the design team met the challenge to develop an interim configuration that would not exceed the available funds, and deliver PS&E’s under a compressed schedule.
The Phase 1 interim structure is a 2-lane, 49-ft wide, 2-span grade separation with a total length of 198 ft spanning the main lanes of IH35. A 6-ft sidwalk runs along the south edge of the deck. The abutment retaining wall and the columns of the interior bent have aesthetic treatments that compliment the other newly constructed overpasses in the area.
The future Phase 2 of this intersection will widen the Phase 1 bridge to a total width of 98 ft (which will accommodate 6 lanes and sidewalks along both sides) and construct two single-lane turnaround bridges. $5.8M Construction cost. Construction to start in June 2010 and expected to be completed in Spring 2011.
